Field Research & Services
Fieldwork to Support Freshwater Research and Management
At UFI, our experienced team offers a wide range of fieldwork services tailored to meet the diverse needs of lake associations, environmental managers, and other lake stakeholders. Whether you need expert field services or support to build your capacity for independent monitoring, UFI is here to help.
Our Capabilities
Water Sample Collection: Perform water sampling from lakes, reservoirs, and streams for analysis of water quality parameters, including physical water properties and nutrients.
Streamflow Monitoring: Measure and monitor streamflow to evaluate watershed dynamics and assess potential loading.
Sediment Coring: Collect sediment cores to better understand nutrient cycling and examine management options.
Aquatic Plant Surveys: Identify and assess the distribution of aquatic plants to inform conservation and management strategies.
Bathymetric Mapping: Create precise maps of lake and reservoir depths to support habitat assessments and management plans.
Remote Monitoring: Gather water quality information from multi-parameter data sondes to track environmental conditions in near-real time.
Each of our Research Scientists holds a Boater's Safety Certificate and has experience trailering and navigating our vessels, which range from small jon boats to our 21' Mako and 23' Steiger Craft. Additionally, our staff maintains active First Aid and CPR training to ensure safety during field operations.

UFI divers use lift bags to help move equipment up to the surface.
Scientific Dive Team
Our certified divers are equipped to handle complex underwater operations. Their expertise includes:
Maintaining and retrieving underwater monitoring equipment in Lake Ontario, ensuring year-round data collection.
Conducting biological surveys of freshwater ecosystems, such as assessments of mussel populations and available aquatic habitats.
Emergency oxygen administration - ensuring preparedness for diving-related incidents and promoting safety during underwater operations.
Training Opportunities
We believe in empowering others to contribute to freshwater research and monitoring. Our staff is available to help lake associations and other organizations interested in learning how to collect water samples accurately and safely for laboratory analysis.
