About UFI
Advancing Freshwater Science since 1981
The Upstate Freshwater Institute (UFI) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Steven Effler as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing fundamental and applied freshwater research and monitoring. With expertise spanning physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, UFI has worked on more than 100 of New York State's lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. Our team specializes in developing monitoring programs, conducting field and laboratory research, and creating water quality models to support ecosystem protection and management.
UFI's interdisciplinary approach has led to over 340 peer-reviewed publications in 35 national and international journals and earned prestigious awards, including the U.S. EPA Region 2 Environmental Quality Award for contributions to Onondaga Lake and New York City's water supply reservoirs. In 2012, UFI partnered with SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) to strengthen collaboration and research capabilities on the Great Lakes. Our ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to delivering innovative solutions for freshwater challenges through timely, science-based information.
Our Mission
UFI is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and promoting the stewardship of New York State's lakes, rivers, and freshwater systems. Through active research, peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, seminars, and professional conferences, UFI contributes to the understanding and sustainable management of these vital resources.
UFI actively collaborates with private organizations, government agencies, nonprofits, and community groups to raise awareness about freshwater systems. Our outreach efforts with students of all ages inspire environmental stewardship and advance the conservation of watersheds and aquatic ecosystems throughout New York State.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
UFI is committed to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where all staff, board members, volunteers, and community members feel respected and valued. We are an organization that both appreciates and celebrates diversity. We do not tolerate discrimination, biases, harassment, or bullying of any kind regardless of race, socio-economic status, nationality, sex, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, or religion in our workplace, programs, or community activities. These principles guide all levels of management and are reflected in our mission, strategic planning, outreach programming, governance, and board composition.
